I am a multimedia visual artist, arts educator, and writer with a focus on materials found in the natural world. My practice is an exploration of combining intuition and observation with reverence for nature. A practice of awe, observation and fine-tuned attention informs an expression that is both grounded in the earth and knowledge as well as contemplative in the far-reaching heavens and the realm of possibilities. Most of my art contains living material which has undergone a process of transmutation to become my central artistic medium—natural inks. From foraging local plants and minerals to extracting their color and ultimately, to letting the inky liquid flow onto surfaces as final expressions, I like to believe that the living materials and I are fully intertwined in the creative process. And as an art educator, I have enjoyed over two decades of teaching experience in kindergartens, schools, art centers, museums, libraries and other cultural institutions. My interactions with both children and adults are grounded in the intention of fostering open-mindedness, creative exploration, and cultural connections, as well as deepening our relationships to both each other and with nature. -Rushan
